For many people, dieting can be difficult. When you go on a diet, you have to give up the fattening foods that you love and replace them with healthy foods. What you do not need to do while dieting is starve yourself. Many people believe that when they are on a diet, that they need to be hungry all the time. This is a common misconception.
You may love fatty sugary foods, however, these foods are not good when you are on a diet. If you have a sweet tooth, try trading in that sugary snack for a piece of fruit. Many fruits have a sweet taste, therefore, you can satisfy your sweet tooth without setting you back on your diet.
When you are trying to lose weight, it is necessary to eat smaller portions. This does not mean that you eat three small meals a day and starve waiting until it is time for your next meal. Rather than eating three meals a day, you will lose more weight by eating six small meals a day. Eating six small meals a day will boost your metabolism. When you get that boost in metabolism, you will burn calories faster. This will prevent you from starving between meals while helping you to lose weight. If you are eating a small meal every few hours, you will never feel hungry.
Drinking water is an excellent way to avoid being hungry. If you drink an eight ounce glass of water before each meal, you will feel full faster. If you feel full, you will not over eat during your meal, in turn, you will lose weight without feeling hungry. Drinking water between meals is also a good idea. There are times when you feel hungry, you are actually just thirsty but your body is confused. Drinking a glass of water can take that hunger away.
Another great way to eliminate your hunger is to eat your meals slow. Studies show that when your stomach is full, it takes about 15 minutes for your brain to get the message from your stomach. If you eat slow, your brain will have a chance to get the stomach’s message before you over eat.
While diet is very important, what most people do not know is that getting enough sleep is equally important. Sleep, or lack there of, affects the levels of many hormones in the body. You have a hormone in your body called leptin. This hormone is produces by the fat cells in your body and is responsible for decreasing your appetite. Your body also releases a hormone called ghrelin. This hormone is is released by your stomach and it stimulates your appetite. When you do not get enough sleep, the level of the leptin in your body decreases and the level of ghrelin increases. If you get enough sleep, the reverse occurs.
Another reason that sleep is important is the cortisol level. When you get a good night sleep, the level of the cortisol in your blood decreases. If you have high levels of cortisol, your metabolism will decrease, making it harder to burn calories. Getting enough sleep will keep the cortisol level low, therefore, boosting your metabolism.
Being on a diet does not mean starving yourself to get to your goal weight. Eating small portions several times a day, drinking plenty of water, and getting plenty of sleep is all you need to do, with a little bit of exercise of course.
