As move into 2014, many of us have made New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight. But, simply losing weight won’t give you that toned midsection that is the number one indicator of a fit and healthy body. That’s why learning to burn belly fat and focusing on ways to flatten your belly should be major components of a weight loss regimen – and it all starts with the types of foods you’re eating.
The reason we start with the types of food, is because some foods will leave you with a bloated belly, which isn’t necessarily a result of just being fat. Foods that are really good for you – like broccoli, avocado, leeks, beans, cherries and cauliflower – can ferment in the intestines, causes flatulence and gas build-up. In addition, eating foods or food products with a high sodium content can make you retain water, and leave you with an even bigger belly. Getting rid of a bloated belly is simple: just reduce your sodium intake, drink plenty of water, and pair gaseous food with other foods/herbs that combat intestinal gas (ginger, peppermint, raw honey, cabbage, flaxseed, apples, apple cider vinegar, and pineapple).
Chewing your food well also helps cut back on gas, because the stomach doesn’t have to work as hard to digest it. Plus, you should be chewing your food thoroughly anyway, because then it takes you longer to eat and gives your brain time to signal your body that it is full.
Other than food, you really need to maintain an exercise regimen to burn belly fat. Some ways to flatten your belly include planks, sit-ups, crunches, “bicycles,” side crunches, side bends, standing crunches, elevated knee raises, and straight leg lifts (a floor exercise, lying on your back). You may also try yoga, or use exercise equipment to help tighten your abdominal muscles. Some abdominal equipment designed for helping you strengthen and flatten your belly include the Ab Roller, Ab Slider, crunch machines (adjustable or stationary), and stability balls. Whether you’re doing floor exercises or exercises using machines, abdominal exercises strengthen your core, improve your posture and make your belly appear even smaller – even before you lose a significant amount of weight.
Just remember, when implementing an exercise regimen to flatten your belly, you will still have to incorporate cardiovascular exercise. Adding both cardio and strength training in your plan get rid of belly fat will increase your metabolism and your lose weight overall.
