Green Tea is touted as one of the best ways to help you lose weight and get healthy. Its detoxifying properties and its metabolism-boosting burst of caffeine can really help send you on your way. Green tea drinks, green tea pills, green tree extract, green tea wraps (we’ll get to that later), green tea colon cleanse (one really big enema), and … well, green tea everything, right? But what does it really do for your body? And, does it really work?
Let’s start with the basics about green tea. Green tea is harvested from the same place black tea is taken from, the Camellia sinensis bush. The only difference between the two, is the level of oxidation – that is the determining factor in which type of tea it becomes. Green tea is un-oxidized and is processed the least, which is why it is so full of antioxidants. Another component of green tea is its polyphenols, which is the healing property of green tea whose use has been in play for centuries.
As far as weight loss, green tea works on multiple levels. First, green tea gives you that caffeine stimulant that increases your metabolism, but it also has a thermogenic effect overall, which essentially means your body runs hotter and burns more calories in the process. Second, in addition to the increase in metabolic activity, antioxidants contribute to weight loss in that they reduce free radicals in your blood stream, which indirectly helps you lose weight because it helps your body to function on a more efficient level. Third, it enables proper digestion, allowing your body to make the maximum use of the calories you do ingest – and lastly, green tea helps to reduce inflammation. In other words, green tea will help you get rid of excess water, eliminating bloating and unnecessary weight from water retention.
So, knowing that green tea has healing properties and that it can boost your metabolism with caffeine, it’s only natural that green tea might be used in other mediums other than weight loss. Green tea can also contribute to keeping your heart healthy, proper digestion (producing benefits other than weight loss), give you every benefit that antioxidants do, help reduce wrinkles, and truly cleanse your body in every way. In fact, that’s why I mentioned the colon cleanse and the green tea wraps, because specialty spas feature green tea body wraps – Ace bandages soaked in green tea and herbs – to facilitate detoxification, improve circulation, fade scars, treat acne, reduce water retention, increase body temperature (metabolism burn!) and a host of other things. As far as the colon cleanse, spas use green tea as the main ingredient to detoxify the body, improve body function, and as a method to decrease the odds of getting colon or intestinal cancer.
After centuries of use, it’s clear that green tea has proven to be a great way to cleanse, to increase metabolism, and to encourage weight loss. We all can benefit from it – it’s just matter of choosing how you want to use it.
