Many people think that chewing gum can help you lose weight. After all, it keeps you from eating other foods, and it provides some sort of oral satisfaction that snackers seem to crave. The problem is, there are a lot of myths that go along with gum chewing and losing weight—but, there are also a lot of benefits, too. It just all depends on how you choose to use gum in your weight loss plan; it’s still up to the individual to set the limits and decide.
For instance, when you are hungry, the difference between chewing a 10 calorie stick of sugar-filled gum and a bag of chips can be substantial, and really add up calorie-wise over the long term. But, do you really only chew a single stick of gum? Many dieters end up succumbing to entire pack of gum (or more), which can leave you with more calories than that original bag of chips you had wanted to eat in the first place. A pack of gum can contain up to 200 calories if you aren’t paying attention.
On the other hand, sugar-free gum is touted as a fantastic option to snacking. Yet, sugar-free does not mean calorie free, and many sugar free gums contain up to 5 calories per stick – not that much different from the regular gum if you have multiple pieces throughout the day. Still, it’s half the calories, so adding sugar free gum into your diet plan may not be such a bad idea. In fact, a Louisiana State University study about gum noted that it help to curb appetitie and help reduce cravings. If chewing gum is good for just that, then we should all be doing it!
Regardless, the bottom line is that if you can save just 50 calories a day on your caloric intake by distracting yourself with gum chewing, you can easily lose an extra 10 pounds a year with little to no effort at all. If you are already incorporating a little exercise into your daily routine, that 10 pounds should melt off with ease. When hunger pangs strike, chewing a piece of gum can save you that extra food intake as long as you have the right perspective.
Do you want to lose weight? Try chewing a little sugar free gum. It may take the weight off faster than you think.
