Consumption of water is the number one requirement for effective weight loss. In fact, the benefits of hydration are innumerable, as in order for our bodies to function efficiently, it has to have the right balance of water. But, on a simplistic level, how does water help you lose weight.?
Water can help you lose weight mainly because the body has a hard time distinguishing between the ingestion of water and food. If you drink a glass of water before you eat, you are likely to eat less because your stomach is telling your brain that it is full. That’s the simple answer: if you’re hungry, drink water. But, that’s only the beginning.
Our bodies are made of approximately 70 % water (can be as low as 50% in some cases, however), and water acts as a medium for enabling multiple functions. According to the Mayo Clinic, water does the following: it moistens tissues, such as those in the mouth eyes and nose; it protects body organs and tissues, it helps prevent constipation; it lubricates joints; it lessens the burden on the kidneys and liver; it regulates body temperature; it helps dissolve minerals and nutrients; and, it carries oxygen to the cells, providing one of the most critical components necessary for cell survival.
So, given that water does all these things, its stands to reason that water is essentially the conduit for weight loss. Let’s go over these functions of water in a little more detail – and maybe you will understand why water is your biggest ally.
- Moistens Tissues. The mouth, nose and eyes are all affected by the level of moisture in your body. When you work out, your get thirsty – and if you don’t quench your body with water you are filling your orifices with an alternative – one that contains toxins and less of the vital nutrient: water.
- Helps Prevent Constipation. Elimination of excesses is also vital to losing weight, and water helps make it happen. Toxins can build up in your system if you don’t clean out your intestines and colon regularly. A healthy body rids itself of unwanted material, and functions more efficiently as a result.
- Lubricates Joints. If you have joint pain, you are less likely to exercise. If you don’t exercise, it’s much harder to lose weight, right? Water lubricates joints, helps reduce inflammation, and by default, the benefits of drinking water here end up helping with weight loss.
- Protects body Organs and Tissues. Where do I start here? The heart is an organ – your kidneys, liver, skin, stomach (digestion), bladder (urinary system, which gets rid of electrolytes)… they are all organs. The list goes on. Drink your water! You can’t lose weight if you are destroying what is helping you burn calories. Period.
- Lessens the Burden on the Kidneys and Liver. By flushing out waste products, your body will be able to process everything a little better. Overall, it will have a minimal effect on short-term weight loss, but is a key component of maintenance.
- Regulates Body Temperature. The reason you sweat is because your body is maintaining its optimal body temperature. It’s how the body was designed, and if you don’t drink enough water you will end up stressing your system and shutting it down – this includes your metabolism, which you want in peak form while you lose weight.
- Helps Dissolve Minerals and Other Nutrients. In order for those supplements you are taking to have an effect, you need water to move them in to your system. Vitamins and supplement are less effective in a dehydrated body.
- Carries Nutrients and Oxygen to Cells. Part of getting in shape and losing weight means you will be not only eating more healthily, but that you will also have some aches and pains from your workouts. The easier it is for the body to get its nutrients and oxygen, the short the recovery time from your workouts, and the less chance you have of weakening your immune system as you take in less calories.
Now that you know what water does for your body, there should be no doubt that hydration is the biggest compliment to weight loss. The benefits of drinking water aren’t limited to being an appetite suppressant or a means of ingesting supplements; water is everyone’s best friend when it comes to losing weight.
